SEND Overhaul Sparks Concern Over EHCP Support
Ministers are under pressure over plans to reform England’s Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) system, amid fears that crucial Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) may be cut back.
The government has confirmed its SEND overhaul is still in progress and no final decisions have been made. However, it has stopped short of guaranteeing that all existing recipients of EHCPs will continue to receive the same level of support .
Charities and campaigners warn that removing legal protections could hurt vulnerable children by impacting access to education, therapy, and specialist care. While ministers say additional SEND investment will continue, critics argue that tightening eligibility could undermine vital safeguards.
Campaigners have called for clearer commitments and more funding before any changes are implemented.
